For you and anyone else out there on the Knox County list, I have
downloaded ALL of the names from Knox County from that site (at least all
of those in directory 950) and combined them into a text (ASCII) file.
The file begins with documentation from the site, including questions
asked by the 1880 census. There are columns with states (usually) listed
-- and I'm not sure what each column contains. I've also referenced each
group with the directory and file from which they were extracted.
There are not thousands of individuals listed -- maybe 300 in all. I
found none of my families there, but if you find one of yours, it's worth
it!
If you would like a copy of this file (it's only 40K), please send me an
e-mail. The subject of your email must be EXACTLY the word "Request" --
no more, no less (do NOT include the quotes). In the body of the
message, you must include the phrase "Knox County 1880 Census". The
message itself will be ignored, but my email program will automatically
send you the file as an attachment. If I'm on-line (as I am about 15
hours a day), you should get a reply within a short time.
One warning -- this was done on a Macintosh, and there are minor
differences in the format of a text file. For those of you who
understand, the Mac uses only Returns at the end of a line, where the PC
expects a Return AND a Linefeed. This will make little difference to
many word processors -- at worst, it should look like one horribly long
line of text without a line break! Don't let this dissuade you from
trying it -- it's only 40K in size, and it really oughta work.
Good luck and I hope you find a valuable nugget!
