Nancy,
Sorry I am slow in resonding but it has been a busy week. Chapman's
history of Knox County published in 1878 and reprinted by Knox Co. Gen. Soc.
in the 1970's has much reading on Rev. John Cross, especially his tangle
with Jacob Kightlinger in Elba Township. It is all told from Kightlinger's
perspective but still a valuable source of documentation. Another
"conductor" who lived close to Knox Co. was Rev. Samuel G. Wright in West
Jersey Township of Stark County. He resided on the old Webster place, only a
couple of miles from Knox Co. and a mile from Peoria Co. Shallenberger and
Leeson both included much about him in their Stark County histories.
Additionally, you should get be able to get Herman Muelder's FIGHTERS FOR
FREEDOM pub. by Columbia in 1958. This book includes the important points of
the previously mentioned ones and has more. Herman was one of my history
profs. at Knox College so I had the benefit of his lectures on the UGRR. I
had just gone over this material in Nov. to speak to a small group.
