Subject: [ILKNOX-L] visiting the county...
Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 08:52:38 -0600

I need some information on making a visit to these counties. I would
like to make the most out of my visit. What is available to the
public in the Illinois courthouses?

I would like to go to Mercer, Rock Island, and Knox counties...I
would appreciate any help or suggestions from those who have visited
the courthouses, libraries etc. I think I will have 3 working days in
the area.

I am looking for Amasa Hadlock & his family who lived in Mercer
around 1850-1900. I know that they owned some land in Rock Island at
one time, and I know that he died in Knox Co in 1904. I don't know if
his first wife died or if they were divorced. I have his death cert
from Knox Co and I know where he is buried. Since, he was in the
poorhouse in Knox county would there be some kind of record in the
courthouse on him?

1) Can the actual vital records be viewed by the public or just the
index? What years are available to look at? Is there a charge to
view the actual record and abstract info or do you have to purchase
the record?

2) What about the deeds and mortgage records? Can the original
record be looked at? And if so what years can we look at? How much
are copies of deeds/mortgages?

3) Also looking for obits from Rock Island newspapers....is there a
library that has them on microfilm? The yrs are from 1880-upward.
Thanks,
Selma
