Finding the name in the 1800 census is about your best bet, once you narrow
the names down you might try for a Will to see if Joseph is listed as a son.
You might also try to find other Gamels in the area and try to connect them
they may have a less common first name you can trace. Have you tried the
marriage index to see if he was married in Il. Do you have access to 1800
census? If not email me off list and I will check census index. Have you
tried to find a will for Joseph it might list relatives other than wife and
children, also try BLM records to see if and when he bought land in Il.
These are a few of the ways I have used to track some elusive ancestors.

Joseph W. Gamel's exact date of death or locate any information that might
show who his parents were. I thought maybe a funeral home, hospital, or
obituary that might have records for 1863. I have located census
information in New York and Illinois on him. Family bible information shows
he was born in N.Y. July 11, 1792 not sure where perhaps Cayuga or
Washington County. Any suggestions on how to get information would be
greatly appreciated. My next step that I am going to attempt is to locate a
Gamel family in N.Y. in 1800 that has an 8 year old son.
