Mary and anyone else who may be interested in the North family who were in
Knox County...
Here is what I have been able to gather so far, but no solid documentation...
John North went to Ireland with Cromwell in 1649-50 and stayed there after
the Cromwellian Wars. It has been theorized (and sounds good to me) that
since he was a younger son and would not inherit he just stayed in Ireland.
We know he was awarded "crown land" and also bought additional land in West
Meath. He was probably a lawyer as so many of the Norths of this family were
in England. He had sons Roger and John (possibly more but these are all we
know of). Roger had 7 children and John had three. Roger's son Caleb came
with his family to America in 1729 and that is our line.
One of John's son, also a John North, migrated to Maine and estasblished the
New England line of Norths.
John's son William stayed in Ireland and married a Miss Wolfe. They had a son
Joseph North, born in Kilbride Castle, West Meath, who married a Miss Briggs.
Their child William was born in Northbrook, Aughrin, Galway County. He
married Margaret Ann Whitestone. Their son Samuel Wade North had a son Henry
Whitestone North who married Ida Ringling, the only sister of the 8 Ringling
brothers. They had three children:John, Henry and Mary Salome.
Again, I do not have documentation for this but it all seems to fit together
with information that I do have. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a
connection, even if this one is not exactly correct.
It's interesting that one of the Caleb North descendants ended up being a
partner with Buffalo Bill and a star in his Wild West show (Frank North) and
another from the Irish line ended up creating the Greates Show on Earth, the
Barnum and Bailey Circus.
