Hi Georgia, Dawn, Peggy, and others,

I was looking at Dorcas' birthdate wrong. Yes, she very well could be
the first wife of my Josiah. She is only 4 years older than him, and it
wasn't uncommon. He didn't marry Mary A. Bowman until 1858, which is 6
yrs after Dorcas' death date of 1852. Now the mystery is---who was
Dorcas Nelson before she was a Nelson???? Where was she born, and who
were her parents? Also, are the children living with him in 1860 all his
from this possible previous marriage? If so, did he meet Dorcas in
Indiana where the children were born? Or, if he was born in Ohio, did
he meet her there, and they moved together to Indiana to start their
family? Many new questions arise if this Dorcas is entered into the
picture.

I see the 8 yr old child named George, who is living with Josiah in
1860. It says he was born in Indiana. What if he was, then they all
moved to Illinois, and Dorcas died shortly after that, but still within
the year 1852? In the 1870 census, George is 15, and it says he was
b.IL. Go figure. It could still be him.

Yes, Dawn, I see in 1860, that Benham has Alfred, Ashford, Sarah, Louisa
and Margaret all with him in 1860 as well. He also has a Laura, age 2
months, b.IL. His wife Amanda is missing in 1860. I wonder if she died
in childbirth with the baby Laura? She would have been ~36 yr old. In
1860 in Knox Co, they also have a couple other people living with them--

Mattison Bowen/Bower/Bouer age 15, male, b.IND
G. McClellan age 24, male, b.OH

I wonder what the possibilities are that one of these guys is related to
Benham's wife?

Well, I hope we are able to keep working on this puzzle of Josiah
Nelson. I was looking at the land plats on a link from the Knox Co page
that another lady sent me. Josiah is living either on or very near land
owned by P.C. Nelson and B.(Benham)Nelson in both 1860 and 1870 from
what I can tell. I think that P.C.(Peter)Nelson figures into their
lives as well.

Thank you all for your continued help. Without these lists, I wouldn't
have what I do now. It's also great to see the list so active for a
change.

Sue

Another lady says she thinks that Dorcas L. Nelson might have been a
first wife of Josiah, but he wasn't born until about 1826 (he's 34 in
1860),
