Subject: [ILKNOX-L] Marchant connection to HALL family
Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 16:40:26 EDT
Hi,
I am descended from Jonah Marchant of Marchant's Settlement which was later
named Farmington, Fulton County, Illinois, whose sister, Fanny "Anna" would
have been ancestor of many in the HALL family. I don't know if this will be
helpful because it is not at all well researched or documented but thought it
might be useful to someone working on this family. (Farmington is not at all far
from Knox County or Peoria County)
My information is:
Fanny Anna Marchant born 31 October 1806 in Berkeley County, Virginia, died
31 January 1870 in KNOX County, Illinois married first 29 July 1824 probably in
Fayette County, Ohio, (1) Mark THURMAN, 2nd child of Phoebe Gourd (1787 VA -
1860 Knox Co., IL) and Thomas A. THURMAN (1779 VA - 1857 Knox Co, IL). Mark
THURMAN was born 3 October 1802 in Virginia and died 26 October 1845 in Salem
Township, Knox County, Illinois. They were parents of at least ten children.
Listed are those with possible connections to the HALL family.
SARAH THURMAN born 3 September 1824, married 8 February 1844 CHARLES McGREW.
HENRY THURMAN born 3 August 1837 in Illinois married 22 September 1859 Eliza
HALL. (Illinois Marriage Records have this listed as follows:
"THURMAN, HENRY A WALL, ELIZA
09/22/1859 00B/0032 00003514 KNOX "
Fanny (MARCHANT) Thurman (1806-1870) married (2) 23 January 1848, Knox
County, Illinois, as his second wife, John W. Walter, son of James Walter
(1763-1839) and Elizabeth Richardson (1766-1845) and widower of Hannah SUMNER (9 May
1793-22 September 1844). John W. WALTER was born 12 December 1789 and died 6
August 1863. John W. Walter and Fanny (MARCHANT) Thurman Walter had only two
children: Melissa Walter who died 1 April 1868 (19y 1m 24d) Knox County,
Illinois and Rebecca Emily Walter b. 1852. She may have married P. Taylor (?) and
Robt. Cummings (?).
JOHN W. WALTER by his first wife, HANNAH SUMNER had at least four children.
Children I have listed for them are:
Bowater (Probably Twin) Walter (1830 Highland Co, OH-1919) m. 2 Feb 1854
Knox Co, IL , Eliza Darnell (1837 Maquon, Knox Co, IL-1900). They removed to
Butler County, Nebraska.
Lettice "Lettia" (Probably Twin) Walter (1830 Highland Co, OH-March 1870
Butler Co, Nebraska) probably married first 3 August 1845 at Knox County,
Illinois, Joshua B. Needles; may also have married William C. Darnell (1834
Knoxville, IL-1893 Bazille Mills, Nebraska). After Lettice died Wm. C. Darnell appears
to have married Nicey Catherine Strain in 1874 Des Moines, Polk County,
IOWA, Nicey being widow of a William McWilliams. (Whew... this needs work and
documentation by anyone intersted in that group. I don't have information that
any of them had children.)
Cynthia A. Walter born 8 March 1833 married 25 September 1851, Knoxville,
Knox County, Illinois. Joel Darnell (1830 Marion County Indiana -1896 Ophie, Deer
Lodge County, Montana)
Richeson Carey Walter b. 18 May 1836 Highland County, OHIO (???) married 18
October 1860 Knox County, Illinois POLLY (MARY) ANN HALL.
I think that that is about it for connections. I have further information on
the Marchant ancestry.
Please note: I believe that most of these families have an interesting
QUAKER history. So don't forget to check Quaker records if researching Darnell,
the name, Bowater, and possibly IMEL.
William W. Darnell (2 June 1802 NC - 18 Nov 1862 Maquon, Knox County,
Illinois) and Priscilla Jane Thurman (13 June 1807 VA - 3 Jan 1863 Maquon, Knox
County, Illinois) are probably the parents of:
Lewis Darnell b. abt 1836 Highland Co, OH;
Joel Darnell b. 2 April 1830 Marion Co, IN m. Cynthia A. Walter b. 8 Mar
1833;
William C. Darnell b. 23 Oct 1834 Knoxville, Knox Co, IL m. (1) Lettice
"Lettia" Walter b. 13 September 1830 m. (2) Nicey Catherine Strain.
Eliza Darnell b. 9 February 1837 Maquon, Knox Co, IL died 14 Feb 1900
Ulysses, Butler County, Nebraska m. 02 February 1854, Knox County, Illinois Bowater
Walter 13 September 1830 d. 29 April 1919 David City, Butler County, NE.
Hope this is of some help or interest to someone. These, not being my direct
line, my information is not well researched and I appreciated the postings
about the HALL family to fill it in a bit. THANKS.
By the way, do you have any information about the parentage of WM. DYER? He
may be a big clue in my Patton family and what they were doing briefly in
Illinois to marry and father a child. I had not considered a Dyer relationship
previous to reading your posting.
