Hello Bob & Melinda,
I used to live in Springfield and that is where I got started doing family
history. The Illinois State Archives has all U.S. Census and their indexes
for the state of Illinois. You would not be limited to searching just
LaSalle Co. there. They also have a number of county histories on their
shelves, in addition to death indexes and records for the whole state, WWI
draft registrations, and marriage records for many counties. The Archives
building is on the south side of the capitol building.
Also in downtown Springfield, located below the Old State Capitol building,
is the Illinois State Historical Library. They also have many county
histories and general reference works, as well as microfilm of most
newspapers printed in Illinois. This is a wonderful source for finding
obituaries after you have located death dates.
Both of these facilities are open at least 5 days a week, but you should
contact them to check their hours. You can reach the State Archives at 217
782-4682 and the Historical Library at 217 782-4836.
Good luck!
Lynn
