Pearl Cook inquired as to the town of Bruce and its relationship to the
City of Streator. Illinois has a somewhat bewildering array of local
governments including: cities, villages, counties, fire protection districts,
library districts, forest preserve districts, mosquito abatement districts
and townships. Each district has certain statutory duties and some taxing
powers, and each usually has elected officials.
A township is not a "town" in the popular sense of the word. In
accordance with the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the five states of the old
Northwest Territory were surveyed into townships of 36 sections each. Bruce
Township is located to the east of the Vermilion River and covers the
northern area of Streator and some unincorporated area north of Streator.
Most of the early settlers located in the area north of Streator. Bruce
Township has some limited statutory duties; mainly, the maintenance of some
roads. It also maintains two of the oldest cemeteries in Lasalle County.(
Mackey and Barnhart) It maintains an office in Streator and has some records
on the people buried in the Mackey and Barnhart cemeteries.
