I have a web page with some limited genealogy info on it. What I felt most
comfortable doing was to publish a limited outline. I did not include living
people, and only gave the year of birth and death. That way, interested parties
could find me through search engines and get an idea of whether or not we were
researching the same family. Further exchange of info is conducted privately
through email.
I certainly would not want my entire genealogy file published by someone else.
Besides the privacy issue, I often correct my own work. If I know who has seen
it, I can contact them with the corrected information. Once it is published on
the web, the misinformation spreads far and wide, and before long people are
sending you your own mistakes in emails and claiming it is fact.
