Hello everyone

I have just recently subscribed to this list having discovered that a
possible relative of mine was a resident of Earl in La Salle County.

The gentleman in question was Charles MUNNIKHUIZEN (often misspelt as
MANIKUSEN, MUNNIKHINZEN and various other ways) who enlisted in Company I of
the 4th Illinois Cavalry in 1861. According to the Company Muster Roll he was
a 26 year old mechanic who was born in England, which has led me to believe
that he might be a member of my family as I have yet to discover anyone of
that name in this country who was not a relation.

I am a complete novice when it comes to genealogical research in the USA, and
would therefore appreciate any advice on how to find out more about Charles
MUNNIKHUIZEN. I have obtained some information from the Illinois State
Archives concerning his Army days, and have also found out that he married in
Mississippi in 1870 but ended his days in the Soldiers and Sailors Home in
Quincy, Illinois in 1893. At the moment I am awaiting a copy of his papers
from the Home.

I would very much like to know what the town of Earl was like around 1860. I
gather from the occupations of the men on the Muster Roll that it was a
farming community so can anyone suggest what Charles' work as a mechanic
would involve. Would he be likely to work with farm machinery?

Can anyone suggest how I can find out when Charles arrived in the USA or in
Illinois itself? Would anyone who has researched their Civil War ancestors
know of any official form upon which Charles would have been required to name
his next of kin? I feel sure that this information must have been required in
a time of war and as he was a single man when he enlisted there is a chance
that he would have named one of his parents or another member of his family.
This information would really help me to determine whether he was the brother
of my great-grandmother as I suspect.

Any help would be much appreciated.
