I just got the new LSCGS newsletter and they were talking about the Carus
House in LaSalle.
My grandparents, Theodore and Helen KROGULSKI, lived one block down from the
"castle on the corner" at 1406 7th Street. That house was the foundation
for the imaginary castles and palaces of my youth. I was always pestering
my grandparents to take us over there to see the house only to be told that
we needed to leave those poor people alone. The closest we were allowed to
go was the sidewalk and gaze up at the house through the dense yard growth.
It always seemed so mysterious...
Grandmother told us that they had not been treated well by the community
during WWI and WWII. Is there any truth to that?
I wish I could go on one of the tours and see the house, however I now live
on the west coast. I don't make it back to LaSalle except every 18 years or
so. Will there be a web tour in the future? I still would dearly love to
see the interior.
I also remember feeding the goats across the street at the factory (and
letting the rabbits out of the cages of my grandparents' neighbors) during
vacations. Are the goats still there?
