In answer to the two recent postings re: Elizabeth Cramer/Creamer (the name is spelled both ways in early records).
Elizabeth was my husband's g-g-g-g-grandmother. Elizabeth died in 1837. To my knowledge, she never remarried.
Elizabeth did sell land to John Haldeman. However, in 1888, the heirs of Elizabeth Cramer filed suit to try to recover her land. Her property was located in the heart of Streator. According to the lawsuit, the claimants believed that the sale to Haldeman was fraudulent because the papers were signed with a mark. Elizabeth was supposedly sick in bed at the time, but she was an educated woman who could read and write and would not have signed anything with just a mark.

I currently have only a transcribed copy of the newspaper articles describing the suit, but intend to look for copies this summer when I am in Streator. The first article was dated Ottawa, Ill, May 17 (Special) - this was 1888. The second article was from the Ottawa Free Trader of May 19, 1888. Records of the lawsuit in the courthouse might also prove interesting - another thing I want to check out this summer.
