Greetings from Streator,
Mr. Gilbert has indexed some of the Streator newspapers that are on
microfilm at the Streator Public Library. The Streator Monitor for
1872, and the Press from 1873 until 1932. The index is by year, so you
have to check each year for the name. The Monitor suspended publication
sometime around 1915. It is on microfilm, but has not yet been indexed,
but later years have not been indexed.
What information do you need? Sometimes having the last name doesn't
help. I was looking from Mrs. Eliza Long McFadden Woodruff's death
notice. Her first husband, C. R. McFadden died in 1849, she married
Woodruff in 1857 and died in 1895. One would think that it would be
published under Woodruff, but...
...from Streator Daily Free Press Tuesday, April 18, 1895
---Mrs. McFadden, residing with her son near Munster, died this morning,
aged about 85 years. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning
at 10 o'clock, Rev. Stoltz officiating.
Or sometimes you will find an obituary filed under "sister of Mrs.
Little." There were two paragraphs about "Mrs. Little's sister", she
died on her birthday, born in Five-Mile-Town, Ireland, daughter's
married names...
It is nice to have the date of death, but if the date comes from a
tombstone....you would not believe how many tombstones have the wrong
information.
So, the more information, the better chance of finding the obituary.
Of course, even when you find the obituary, you might be disappointed.
The Lesak family arrived in Streator in the early 1890's, they stayed
in the Streator/Kangley area. When the patriarch of the family died in
1911, this is his obituary:
"Mr. Lesak died yesterday and will be buried tomorrow."
Even when Col. Plumb's sister died, the only notice that I found was
that he was returning to Washington. And, Dr. Streator's "recent death"
was mentioned in an interview with Col. Ralph on the third page of the
paper.
