Also, consider using the 1880 U.S. census that the LDS church placed online
in October. http://www.familysearch.org
Select the census link on the left side of the home page and, on the next
page, select the 1880 U.S. census in the top box. You can then customize
census searches in many ways; e.g., surname Johnson, born Norway, census
Illinois.
