...three birthday cakes, one containing 88 red, white and blue candles.
...Mr. Bean was born in Utica, N.Y., April 13, 1844, and when the war of
the rebellion broke out he enlisted with the 16th New York Volunteers.
He was present at the battle of Bull Run and concluded his fighting at
St. Mary's Heights at the right of Fredericksburg. After being mustered
out in Washington, he worked in the government printing office there,
and was in the capital when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
He came west a short time later and for a time resided in El Paso,
Ill., where he purchased a part interest in the El Paso Journal. He
came to Streator in 1870 and was a part owner of the Free Press for a
time. He later bought the Monitor which he converted into a daily
newspaper in 1883.
