Mike
Thanks for the history; I found it very interesting in light of the
abduction of the Hall girls in Illinois, and their ancestors history.
The saying "What goes around comes around" comes to mind. Also thanks
for the book information, I love book recommendations and will
definitely look for this one.

I've noted the exchanges regarding HALL's and I thought I'd throw in a
little history of the name in Northern England, where the family name
was supposed to have originated from, specifically from Redesdale (the
valley of the River Rede) in the county of Northumberland. In the 1500's
to the mid 1600's, large families such as the HALL's, MILBURN's,
HEDLEY's, DUNNE's and others in this area termed "The Middle Marches",
became known as "The Border Reivers". These families raided across the
border into Scotland, and stole whatever was available, including
cattle and women and children, and anybody who resisted was killed or
held to ransome. On the opposite side of the border were the ROBSON's,
BURN's, KERR's and other lesser families who reciprocated in kind, and
untill the late 1500's this area was noted as the most lawless in the
kingdom. There is an excellent book published on the subject of "The
Border Reivers" entitled "The Steel Bonnets" by George MacDonald Fraser,
ISBN 0 00 272746 3.
