Chera,
Thanks so much for responding. The names Liptak, Lesko, Petko, Kraynak,
Kucharik, Korfanta, and Kacir also run through my family tree. There was
Victoria (Victua) Liptak that witnessed the baptism of my grandfather, John
August Petko, March 1890 along with another sponsor, Andreas Stefanich
(Stefancin). There was an obituary published in 1929 (Joanie from the ILLASALL-
L group sent me this) for John's only older sibling, Charley (Charles)Petko
stating his grandmother was Veronica Lesko. I think her maiden name was
Kraynak and her husband was Josef. I just sent for Mary Petko's death
certificate, but was sent the certificate for a Mary Petko infant of 18 hours
that was born to Charley's son and wife, Elmer and Anna Petko. So still not
sure of her parents. Charley married Mary Kucharik. The 1910 US census for
LaSalle Co., 6-WD Streator, Bruce Twp, (ED 83, sheet 18B), lists the Peter
Petko family with all their children (Charley, Joseph, Peter jr, Andrew, Mary
(Creamean), Annie, Irene, and Caroline) except John and Margaret (Allen). John
and Margaret are listed on the 1910 census 4-WD ED 81, sheet 16B, as boarders
of their grandmother (widowed), Veronica Lesko. John was 19 and Margaret was
8. My mother was born to John in 1912. He never married her mother but did
have her baptised in his church (St Stephens). She always used his name
(Petko) and actually met him and moved to Manteca, Ca where he married Ella
Williams (Mary Eleanor Gillett) in 1969. He died six months later in 1969 and
I never got to meet him. I married and moved to Mo in 1964 before my mother
knew where he lived. My mother is still living and resides in a nursing home
in Manteca but no longer knows any of us. She is 92 and has a form of
alzheimers. After the 1910 census is where I lose both John and Peter Petko.
Mary is listed as a widow on the 1920 census (10th ward, ED 97, sheet 12B) and
as Mary C. on 1930 census 6th ward, ED 9, sheet 14B). I have a copy of John's
WWI draft card (27 JUL 1918) and know from that that he was living in Chicago
and working at the Kraft Shipyard. He was single and had already served
military time for 4-1/2 years in the 14th US Calvary and the 83rd Artillary. My
mother never talked about him and I have no picture of him. I would love to
know so much more about him and his family.
I live in Jefferson City, Mo, Chera, and have some health problems that make
traveling difficult and though I have 12 grandchildren, and 3 adult children,
my husband of 40 years and I are raising our two oldest granddaughters (14 and
15 years old). They keep us very busy---just finished homecoming week. I most
definitely want to keep in touch with you. I am, however, in the process of
trying to obtain records on Peter and Mary and John. Is the library you refer
to the Reddick Library in Ottawa. Perhaps I can write them. I almost forgot---
Mary's mother, Veronica (Veronika Kraynak Lesko) also had a son named August
(Gustav)---perhaps John was named after him---and he was known as "Gus". Gus
was married to Susanna (Susie) Korfanta Liptak. I am not sure if she had
another marriage. She was married to Leopold Liptak on 22 Apr 1889. Her
mother's maiden name was Rose (Rosalie) Koller. Susanna and Gus raised her son
Leo Liptak, Emma. Mary , Austinia, Clara and Regina. Susanna also had a sister
Rose and sister Mary and a brother Michael.
Does any of this sound familiar? Hoping to hear from you again---Sharon Smith
