Only the birth information has been taken off Ancestry and Rootsweb for
California. The death index still works; I just tried it. It is the same
for Texas.

It was our wonderful (tongue-in-cheek) governor, Gray Davis that yanked the
birth information off the 'net for the State of California. The issue made
the local newspaper (Riverside Press-Enterprise) over the past week or so.
After the fiasco of the electricity rates & gas gauging, it is not surprising
that this governor of ours would be the catalyst for this move.
As stated before, I can see the reasoning behind the birth records be yanked,
because they included those born through 1996, myself & my entire family
included. I'm glad I extracted as much as I could of our California
families--paying those exhorborant rates for copies is beyond my pocket-book.
It was nice while it lasted ...
