Ok I sent my response privately to the original person
who first brought the "stole my data" message. After
reading all the comments that have since followed on
this mail list, I believe that we as genealogists
(professional and amateur) need to do some things in
order to make our research sharing count:
1) Share only the information that is the direct line.
Do not include the other descendants. Example:
your name
your parents
your grandparents
your great-grandparents
your great-great-grandparents
By doing such you are sharing very basic information.
If they want to publish, let them find the other
descendants of the couple on whom they are basing
their publication.
2) Don't include your sources. Make them prove that
you are correct. By doing so will make them search
for the information so that if they do publicly share
that they will have to answer to anyone inquiring
about their source.
3) Make sure that you include a statement with the
information that you are sharing it only with that
individual and no one else including postings to
websites and submissions to for-profit businesses.
You could also include something that "failure to
honor your request will be cause for denial of any
information supplied to them and/or a legal course of
action". OR Tell them that's what you found somewhere
on the internet and have yet to verify the facts as
gospel truth.
4) If for some reason you have some doubts about the
individual, purposely submit some individual(s) with
false information. Then if it appears on the
internet, you'll know that they can't be trusted at
any time. You will also have the consolation in
knowing that you have the correct information and
you'll have the last laugh. However, should you find
that they have submitted the information on the
internet with the factual data, then you know they did
one of two things: 1) checked your data with their
own research; or 2) got the information from some
other unsuspecting relative. This will at least tell
you they can be trusted to follow up with research of
some sort and possibly can be a team member for some
of your brick walls.
I know that we all would like to share and I too have
been the victim. However, my consolation was that I
did not provide any sources and that I have continued
to search for additional proof of my records. They
say experience is the best teacher and I think those
of us who have been scammed in some way have learned
our lesson quite well.
Now, lets get back to working on our family trees and
put this subject aside. Thank you.
