A big thank you to those of you who responded to my question about the
Methodist Episcopal Church in Alton; what a great list!
I found the original information on Heritage Quest:
Hair, James T.
Gazetteer of Madison County : containing historical and descriptive sketches
of Alton City, Upper Alton, Edwardsville, Collinsville, Highland, Troy,
Monticello, Marine, Bethalto, and other towns, including some account of the
resources of the various townships : together with an exhibit of the
manufacturing establishments, newspapers, banks, churches, schools, and
other institutions of the county : to which is added a directory of the
Altons, and a list of the names, occupation and residence address of the
merchants, manufacturers and farmers of the townships and villages of the
county
Evansville, Ind.: Unigraphic, 1973, 293 pgs.
Reprint. Originally published: Alton, Ill. : J.T. Hair, 1866.

The reference to the Methodist Episcopal Church history is on pp 133-134.
The book is also on Ancestry, but p 133 is missing. Heritage Quest is
probably available through your local library.
