Carolyn, and others,
Anyone can sign up to get daily or weekly email notices of Ancestry.com's
new databases which can be searched free for 10 days. Just go to their site
and put your e-mail address in the box under "Ancestry Daily News." Most
of the time I toss the messages after a quick look at the table of contents,
but occasionally there will be a database that is for a county or time I am
interested in. Getting the e-mail saves me constantly going to their site
to check out what is free. The messages also contain columns on genealogical
tips and news. I have never gotten junk mail from other outlets from giving
Ancestry my address. Ancestry does occasionally send messages about
products they are selling. Although I don't think Ancestry's service is
worth the subscription for the areas I am interested in, I have signed on
during their occasional free periods and found some items. When they or
FTM's GenealogyLibrary.com get all the census scans online then they will
get my money for an occasional intensive month of census work. Waiting 6
weeks for ILL films and then having an frantic two weeks at the library is a
lot better than paying airfare and hotel bills to view the censuses at a
regional National Archives, but being able to view them at home would be
tops!
