Hugh, thanks again for giving me suggestions on places to investigate. I'll contact the Artland website organization. German was my major in college, so I can make my way through the website with only a little difficulty.
You're correct about the "Sjoerdsma" name. It originates from Friesland in Holland. Fortunately, the Friesians have documented their lines on the web quite well. This line of Sjoerdsma's (which means "son of George") originated from a tiny village named Ee in Friesland. My line of Vanderveen's come from just over the border in Germany, from the village of Veldhausen. I believe Veldhausen may actually have been in Holland at the time they were there, but the border has moved over the years. The two villages are only 2-3 hours' driving distance from each other!
Thanks again for your help on the Mohlman's!
Robin
