Vicki,
I found a few items on HOPPER, particularly S.J. or Silas J.

I'll start with:
Mary HOPPER (pg 430)-Sciota township, Muddy Lane (school?), Dist. No. 4-organized 1867. she was a teacher-no date given.

A.P. HOPPER (pg 638)-Blandinsville-arrived about 1846 "and for many years has been engaged in the milling business."

Hopper & Meeks (pg 641) 1877 Blandinsville Business Directory-Miller, 2 blocks west of depot (this would probably by A.P. HOPPER)

S.J. (pg 638)-Blandinsville-"Among the many who have engaged in business here during the past 35 years, we recall the name of S. J. Hopper who came here about the year 1846 and for 16 or 18 years enjoyed a very large trade. Mr Hopper continued in business until elected sheriff of the county in 1860, when he removed to Macomb, remaining there until his death, which occurred a few years afterwards."

Silas J. (pg 255, 406)-1860 elected sheriff, 2,315 votes as Republican vs Harvey T. Gagg, Democrat, 2,251 votes.

Hope this helps,
Vicki
