Perhaps they wanted to move to some place where the war wasn't fought. I
know Illinois sent a lot of soldiers, but I don't recall any battles being
fought there. It was probably just a part of moving on westward. I have
also noticed that many times entire groups of people (perhaps villages) moved
together or within a short time frame. Perhaps one person ventured out and
then told everyone back home how great it was. I find this an interesting
phenomenon but you will frequently see the same names in a county that were
in a census in a person's previous location. It's amazing to me how much
people moved considering they lacked our modern modes of transportation.
