There is no surname Balm listed for the 1790 census. I like this book
because it is set up in such a way you can easily look for alternate
spellings. The only thing close is a series of Balcoms of various spellings
which might have been shortened to Balm (or maybe they came after 1790).
This name makes one wonder if variations such as Balkum might have been a
misspelling of Bollom - or whether Bollom became a misspelling of Balkum or
Balcom - if the pronunciation was slurred. In doing research in this time
period one has to remember that spelling was of no consequence - there are
documents with three spellings of the same surname in one document. Also
clerks wrote what their ears heard and depending on the nationality of the
clerk and his method of spelling it could be spelled quite differently. My
Thornborough (pronounced Thornbury) ancestor is written as Tarnebury in her
marriage record in a Swedish church. Nadine
