I have BARKERS in MONROE & ST.CLAIR who came to IL 1818-1820 from MAINE. May be seen as BAKER
They came with the inlaws, THOMPSON. Along the way, in Cincinnati OH they run into some of their old neighbors that moved to OH at an earlier time.
They stayed in OH and Barkers in KY where Nelson Barker was born while a couple of the group went to IL to insure land. It was dangerous because of the FALLS they had to go over, and because of the pirates Cave-In-Rock in southeast IL on the River.
They made it onto the Mississippe, but didn't get far as the river had froze. Apparently they ended up on the MO side, and went across after the ice melted. some of them stayed in MONROE & some of them went on to ST.CLAIR
In that group were BARKERS, THOMPSONS, POTTER, TEMPLE and others. Some of these families were from MA in early 1700's, but moved away because of their religion and ethnic background.
They were from U.K. at time the English were not recepted well.
