Shari, I also did some checks here for you, ....and nothing with the
Brokenhoff name, but if he did change his name to Brown....there is in
Harrison, Vigo Co. (same Co. as Terre Haute) the following.

Fred Brown Lodger Feb 1848 52, S Germany/Germany/Germany Immigrated 1875
Bar tender.......there is a Fred Brown on the 1880 Miami Co. Indiana with a
family, that also matches dates, and the birth of his children would suggest
he arrived between 1865-1871. Of course not sure if these are the same
man, but certainly worth checking out. John
