Subject: NETIQUETTE FOR THE MORGAN CO MAILING LIST
Date: Sun, 03 Aug 1997 19:22:11 -0500
The following info is from a page on the Macoupin County site, and is
used here with their blessing. The Morgan list is so new that we do not
yet have our own Netiquette page on line. But, I'm workin' on it.
While some of the information contained in this e-mail was in the
Welcome file sent when you joined the ILMORGAN-L, it doesn't hurt to
review it a second time.
Most messages having to do with genealogy are acceptable, if they aren't
too
long... Suitable topics include (but aren't limited to) information from
your
own research and requests for assistance from others; reviews,
criticism, and
questions about software and hardware used in connection with genealogy;
and messages about good places to find genealogy information, be those
places bookstores, libraries, or the Internet.
When you post a message to the list please be courteous and to the
point.
Some lists are slow, so give your mail a day or two.
Keep the thread of the message about genealogy in Morgan Co IL.
The list is not moderated. Any message sent is automatically
bounced back to everyone on the lists. While I in no way want to stifle
free
discussion, as listowner I reserve the right to step in if a flame war
erupts that
becomes tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly
(use of profanity, for instance).
If you have a personal message for someone, please send it to their
address,
not the list server address. Any mail sent to ILMORGAN-L will
automatically be sent to everyone on both lists.
***************************
DO NOT send attachments to the lists. Announce information about an
attachment to the list. If someone wants the attachment, then you can
send
the attachment by private email. PLEASE!
****************************
Messages over 10K in length (that's 150 to 200 lines, usually) unless
they are
likely to be of very general interest. A 900 line descendancy chart from
Jacob
Zigler isn't likely to be of general interest -- instead post the first
few
generations and offer to e-mail the rest to interested parties.
Copyrighted material (which includes private e-mail from others,
articles
transcribed out of modern newspapers, extracts from most CD-ROMs, etc)
cannot be posted to ILMORGAN-L or ILMORGAN-D.
Commercial posts (except for brief one-time product announcements) are
inappropriate.
"Surname signatures". If and when the ILMORGAN-L messages are
archived, "surname signatures" (those cute lists of surnames that people
like
to append to the bottom of their messages) will interact with the
archive
search, we cannot accept messages that include them. Please, when
posting to
ILMACOUP-L, leave them off. You can tell the group about the surnames
you're researching even if you don't use a surname signature.
If you have persistent problems contact Pat Hall or me
Thanks
Ray Henderson
