Pat,
You asked about Adam Vansel.....I looked at the 1850 Morgan Census and found
Adam & Rhoda listed just two houses down from James Ray age 41 and Berlinda
age 39, both b KY. Here is the listing:
#2398/2448 VANCIL, Adam 35 mw farmer 300 IL
Rhoda 38 fw KY
Elizabeth 14 fw KY
Mary 14 fw IL
Jacob 12 mw IL
John 8 mw IL
Francis 6 mw IL
RAY, William 16 mw IL laborer
Household in between James Ray and Adam Vancil is CONSIDER TAYLOR, age 45 b
MA and wife Sephronia, age 44 b Mass and family.
Just looked at Morgan marriages: VANCIL, Adam and RAY, Rhoda 25 Jan 1848.
Looks like Adam was married previously with children, maybe Rhoda,
too...don't understand the dau Elizabeth 14 being born in KY when Adam was
born & married in IL...and there are two females age 14...possibly Eliz. is
Rhoda's dau? I would wonder if Rhoda wasn't married to a ? RAY/RHEA first?
Do you have record of one of a Rhoda m a RAY?
I found the following marriage for ADAM VANCIL:
Adam VANCIL and PEGGY McCULLY 14 June 1835
So possibly Peggy died aft 1844 and bef 1848 and these are her children?
With excepton of Elizabeth?
VANCIL's were in Macoupin CO IL...in fact there was a VANCIL'S POINT in N.
Palmyra Twp. 1875 Atlas, just a mile or so from Morgan CO line, Waverly Twp.
Let me know what you come up with...interesting!
And I do enjoy those letters, you are right there is much history in
them...wish we were all so lucky! I have a couple from KY written in late
1820's re the death of the father STEPHEN HOLLAND REID, but not so much good
material as yours. Will look them up...maybe put them on, too?
Mary Ann
