From: Cheryl L. Higgins,
Hi, I am new to the list and I am looking for information on any WHITNAH
surname in Morgan County- or elsewhere - My Whitnahs came to OH from West
Virginia, when Eli Whitnah Married Sophie EVANS from Ohio. They raised
their children in Greene County, OH and came from there to Morgan County IL.
They may have been in MO first, but settled in Morgan County. Eli, his
possible brother "A.W." WHITNAH then went with at least one of their
children, Charles, and his family to Uticah NE, where Elie and AW ran a
general store. Eli returned to Morgan County, however, and is buried there.
As he served in the Civil War in a Morgan County Infantry, some veterans
were granted land in NE and this may be why they spent some years there.

Eli'sobituary traces his origins from Xenia (spelled "Zenia" in the papers,
then,
so its been a while tracking the place) Ohio.

"When I die, daughter, scatter my ashes along the old stagecoach road, where
it breaks out of the pines
and comes down into the resevoir, if that's still there. It's where I
stopped my horse to dring, and looked across
to where the road came up again on the other side." Epitaph, "Guardians" C.
