Georgia,
I am descended from Morgan County Birdsells. Clark Birdsell had a son Lewis, born September 5, 1827 (according to the 1878 History of Morgan County). Also according to that history, Lewis married first Sallie A. Smith, and second Mary C. Armstrong (Morgan County, November 29, 1855). In the 1870 Census for Morgan Co., in Wright's Precinct, Clark Birdsell and his wife Wealthy are family #81, family #82 is Lewis Birdsell age 42 and wife Minerva age 38(Grimsley, married Morgan County Feb. 7, 1862) with children Francis M. age 18, Samuel age 8, Lilla A. age 2, George age 18, James age 14, and William O. age 5. The next family is Clark's son John with his wife Margaret (Armstrong). I have always thought that this Lewis/Louis should be Clark's son, but the 1878 history does not list Minerva as Lewis's wife. Obviously if Lewis and Minerva married in 1862, the older boys in this family are from an earlier marriage. I am descended from John Birdsell (Clark's brother, not his so!
n), and from William Birdsell born about 1770-1775, died in Greene Co. IL about 1837. I believe that Clark and John were William Birdsell's children from an earlier marriage (I am descended from William through his son Peter from his 1826 marriage to Catherine Miller Boruff). Any thoughts?
Ellen
