Waverly is a well-known center of farming, which originally attracted many Irish farmers (my GGGrandparents being some of them) after crossing the big pond. Many of the new citizens of these small towns came there because one of their relatives wrote back and extolled the virtues of the place. Generally, those virtues for the Irish farmers were good rich land, and CHEAP! In the case of my Pattersons, they were lured ever westward with tales of even better and cheaper land, until they settled in Nebraska.
