Kenneth: I think Antioch Church was in "downtown" Rosebud. :) I think
Independence is north and maybe east of Rosebud. My grandparents, Thomas
and Ruby Faulkner Terry, and quite a few of my other relatives are buried
there. I was born about 4 miles south of Rosebud. I wouldn't mind having
copies of the minutes of the church and will reimburse expenses. Thanks.

This may or not help at this time but as a youngster I seem to remember
going to a Independence Church near Rosebud with my grandfather. Both he
and my dad were born in that area. I believe I also have ancestors buried
there. Also there was a Antioch Church that sounds familiar. Hope you find
something. I have some minutes from the church somewhere in my files if I
can find them. Hope this helps.

Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Looking for Information on Independence Cemetary
>I have been researching my gggrandfather Henry Shappard who lived in the
Rose Bud area from the early 1850s until his death in 1883. With the help of
Connie Gibbs, the Pope County Clerk and Recorder, I now have marriage
licenses for not only Henry, but his brother William and sister Annie as
well. Up to this point I had not been able to find their mother though. All
I knew was that Hannah Beckman Schaphard married an "Obermark" after losing
her husband Fritz Schaphard at sea on the way here. Connie unknowingly
provided the key to finding "Hannah". She gave me a copy of the Pope County
Militia Roll for 1862 which listed both William (age 21) and Henry (age 18)
as "In the service" It was the next name on the list that caught my eye,
because it said "H. Overmark". I had never seen this spelling, so I did a
search in the Illinois Marriage index for "Overmark" and guess what turned
up? In 1854, Fredrick Overmark married "Anna Shubehart" in Pope County!!
This was just 3-4 yea!

>I detail all this to show that the proper spelling of names may have come
into vogue in the 1900s. In all the documents that Connie sent me, I have
at least 5-6 variations of the current "Shappard" surname. My search for
the German or Prussian location of my families roots now takes a somewhat
different turn with this 1854 phonetic spelling. In addition, Connie sent
me a copy of William Shappard's Civil War discharge papers listing what
looks like "Chilcru" or "Chilciu" in Germany as a place of birth followed by
either "Co" or "leo" following. Henry's discharge paper lists what looks
like "Chilcen" or "Chicien" Germany. Does anyone else have a German ancestor
with a similiar sounding villiage or region in Prussia as a place of birth?
Was there a prominent area in Prussia that Pope County settlers in the Rose
Bud-Bay City area come from?

someone elses e-mail that referred to these studies as the"thrill of the
chase". To that I say a hearty "Amen"
