I also made my last trip from CA to Pope County in the 80's. I was not
the least bit disappointed and gained lots of info that I couldn't
get through the mail. Prior to that, the County Clerk was absolutely
going beyond the call of duty for me (through the mail) and I obtained
copies of all documentation they had in records. Of course, I did
years of prepatory work before getting there, so I had many live
personal interviews of family cousins that I had never met, and got
even more info. One such family was the Maxwells, who at that time
were living in Kentucky. It was a terrific visit!! and today I consider
it invaluable. I even taped the interviews of many who have since
passed away. We spent one or two days at The Mansion, which was
then being remodeled and worked on as a Bed and Breakfast. We
went down to Massac County, and stayed at a motel there. People
were really friendly, hospitable and as helpful as they could be.
Most of all, the memories were good enough to carry with me, and
I am still grateful for the warmth and endearments we experienced.
Yes, the cemeteries are not always in good shape, but then we families
out of state and distant from there do very little to support their upkeep.

God bless and happy Thanksgiving,
CarolSue
