Subject: KEMPH (KAMPF), Will Co.
Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 20:18:23 -0500 (CDT)
Ulrich KAMPF b 1813 Switz d 1874/75 KS moved from Lucas Co. OH to Will Co.
IL abt 1846. His spouse was Magdalena Von GUNTO(E)N, though later she was
called Mary. Five of their eleven children were born in Will Co. He and
sons served in the Civil War. After the War he and some children moved with
KEELER, ROSE, and BLAKE relatives by wagon train from Grundy Co. IL to Clay
Co. KS. His name gradually became americanized, from KAMPF to KEMPH. In KS
he no longer used the name Ulrich - it became Joseph William.
I have traced many of their descendants in KS, OK, CA, ID, AR and elsewhere
- a bunch in Montana. What I have not been able to do very well is trace
descendants of the children who I think remained behind in Will Co., and I
would appreciate some help on them. I think they probably lived in or
around Lockport, at least initially, or later:
1. Elizabeth KEMPH b 1834/36 OH md 15 Jun 1851 Will Co. IL John (or Joshua)
CRONEEN b 1814. I know they had at least one child, Cornelia who md (--?--)
RAFFERTY.
2. Frederick KEMPH b 1842 Lucas Co. OH d 1931 at Kankakee IL. He md 26 Dec
1866 Will Co. IL Lydia BUMP b 1849 IL. I think the family lived mostly in
Homer Twp., Will Co. Frederick served in the Civil War - his arm was
shattered at the Battle of Drury's Bluff in VA. After Frederick died, Lydia
may have gone to Riley Co., KS. I know of 8 chilldren, as follows - most
probably lived in Will Co.:
Albert Thomas b 1867 md Sorene JOHNSON
James Ulysses b 1870 md Charlotte WHITNEY
William H. b 1872
Mary Lucinda b 1875 md Frank B. STITT
Ella b 1880
Alfrata L. b 1885 md Maurice PADDOCK (They had daughter Verna)
Pemeklia b 1886
Caroline H. b 1888 md George William OTT
3. Josephine KEMPH b 1847 Bristol IL d 1941 Clare Co. IL, md 1864 Will Co.
IL (1) Moses Benjamin ROSE b 1842 NY, md 1872 Kankakee IL (2) Calvin H.
COTTON 1833-1919. Josephine had two children by Moses ROSE, and 9 by Calvin
COTTON.
4. Sarah Jane KEMPH b 1855 Lockport, Will Co. IL d 1943 Minidoka Co. ID, md
(1) William Lafayette HUNTER b 1846 Quincy IL, md (2) (--?--) BROADBENT, md
(3) Grant AVERY, and (4) Michael OTT. She and Michael Ott were living about
1939 in Lockport. Sarah Jane's children were by her first husband, and I
know descendants are in Montana, Idaho, and California. HUNTER went to
Alaska, never came back, and was divorced. I would like to know more about
each of the spouses, particularly HUNTER and OTT.
Known descendants of my ancestors Ulrich and Magdalena (VON GUNTON) KAMPF
have been published in an article I wrote several years ago for the Riley
Co. (KS) Genealogical Society publication "Kansas Kin." I am now completing
an updated manuscript for a small book that will include many more
descendants, many ancestors in Switzerland, photos, etc. I would like to
include more information about descendants of the above listed children who
lived in Will Co. Anything whatever you can contribute will be appreciated.
I would be especially appreciative if you could put me in contact with
descendants of Elizabeth (KEMPH) CRONEEN ca 1834/36-, and Frederick KEMPH
1842-1931.
