Vivian,

Try another tack. Write the Illinois State Deparmnent of Public Health.
Tell them you are writing a research paper (which you are) on State Hospitals
in the 1930's. Request a list of State Tuberculosis Hospitals, State Mental
Hospitals, and any other hospital facilities the State may have had at the
time. That should give you the reason she was hospitalized, as TB patients
would not have been hospitalized in the same buildings as mental patients.

Also try the local library reference desk. Ask if they can give you the
names of State hospitals open in 1930 and what illness they were for.
