Yes, I agree with you - with a bit less passion perhaps - but, definitely
agree. A family tree project can give children a new perspective on
themselves and their place in a family as well as in time and history. As you
pointed out, there can and should be other options for children who, for
whatever reason, cannot do a tree. That does not mean all students should be
deprived of such a significant educational experience. Among the many
benefits, this sort of project promotes research skills, interest in and an
awareness of history, a stronger sense of self, and even home and family life
since parents will have to assist and hopefully pull out old pictures and old
memories. Not many projects can hope to achieve as much.
