Thanks to all who have replied so far. I will be coming to Springfield with
my friend and author, Kristin Johnson. Kristin edited the book, Unfortunate
Emigrants. Kristin will speak at a Historical Society meeting on the 15th of
Sept. I believe she will also do a book signing at Barnes and Noble, but not
certain of the date/time/place, etc. for that. We will be there from the 12
to 19th of Sept. Plan to visit West's Cemetery and Thayer Cemetery, plus any
others we can find on Sunday. Monday we will start researching the Donner
family. In my case I will also be looking for Torrence family information and
Kristin is also researching the James Reed family. George Donner was my 3rd
great grandfather through his daughter, Sarah (who is NOT listed in the Early
Settlers of Sangamon County, but is a proven daughter). Sarah md. John
Torrence and they both died in the fall of 1849 and are buried in the Taylor
Cemetery located at Lake Sangchris - visited there earlier this month - quite
an experience! Thought perhaps someone might have ideas for research
facilities we would overlook from not being very familar with what and where
the research facilities are located. Mr. Allen Francis was a close friend of
the Donners and editor of the newspaper - would sure like to find out what
happened to his personal papers after he died - anyone know anything of his
descendants. Again, thanks for all your help. Jo Ann Schmidt in Houston.
