FYI
IRAD is Illinois Regional Archives Depository and is located in Brooken
Library, University of IL at Springfield. One can get there by going
South on Interstate 55 south of Springfield, exit Toronto Road, East and
follow the signs to University. It is a few miles from downtown.
The IL State Capital Bldg. is on 2nd and Capitol Sts, faces 2nd St. The
Norton Bldg. is just south of the Capital, easy walking distance.
The Old State Capital which houses the IL State Historical Library is
right in the middle of downtown Springfield, between 5th and 6th Sts,
Adams and Washington Sts.
Lincoln Library with Sangamon Valley Collection is located corner of 7th
& Monroe Sts. just a few blocks from downtown. Either the IL State
Historial Library or Lincoln Library would be a place to search for the
papers of Allen Francis. Lincoln Library houses microfilms of all early
and present issues of Springfield newspapers. They have an Obituary Index
Card file from these newspapers.
The 10 Nov 1981 issue of the State Journal-Register, Springfield, IL
newspaper, has an article on *The Donner Party* in the Sesquicentennial
Edition, copied from the Nov 19 & 26th, 1847 issues of the IL State
Register (Springfield). Quote "The narrative was prepared by Mr. James
H. Merryman from letters written by JAMES REED,esq. to James W.
Keyes, esq, of this city" unquote. There is a poem, author unknown,
written 4 Apr 1849 and reprinted in this issue, called "Parting for
Sacramento". You could also find this at the IL State Historical
Society, Newspaper Div., where they have microfilm of newspapers
throughout the State.
Enjoy your trip to Springfield!
