MCCAHERTY
Looking for some help with this one. My husband's 2nd great grandfather was John Henry McCaherty. He was born in 1873 in Illinois. most likely in Greene County. On 17 Oct 1896, he married Cora Crabtree in Greene County. They preceded to have 7 children.
1.Beatrice b. Jan 1898-never mrd.
2.Charles b. Dec 1899
3.James Claude b. around 1902
4.J. Clarence b. 12 Jun 1905--- Direct Ancestor
5.Beulah K. b. 1908
6.Verna b. around 1912
7.Venita b. around 1917
8.Burdell b. 12 Jul 1919 ( Mostly known by Happy)
John Henry's parents were born in Ireland. I have found a Charles and Ann McCarty living in Scott County, Illinois. IF this is them, this is Charles McCarty and Anna Donovon who married 26 Aug 1865 in Scott County, Illinois. In 1870 they are living in Winchester, Scott County. The children are Charles and Mary, ages 3 and 1 respectively. Charles and Anna state they were both born in Ireland.
In 1880, this same family is living in Bloomfield, Scott County. There are now 6 children: Charles, Mary, John, Anna, Maggie, and Kate, ages being 13, 11, 6,4,3, and 1 respectively.
In 1900, they are back in Winchester. It is just Charles and Anna, with a daughter Emma, age 16.
In 1910, I *think* they are still in Winchester. I say think because the husband's name is Callahan, not Charles. Ages are right for both Charles/Callahan and Anna. Also a niece, Ella Blanche Wallace, age 3, is living there.
Callahan died in 1913 and Anna in 1923. They are buried in St. Mark's Cemetery in Scott County. A few of the children listed in the censuses is also there...
So I am wondering. Am I on the right track with this family? Is McCarthy and McCaherty the same family? Both parents are born in Ireland (of course with the last name starting with Mc it could very well be anybody born in Ireland). In the 1880 census, there is a child by the name of John, age 6. which would fit John Henry McCaherty that married Cora Crabtree. Of course this isn't definite proof.
So looking for anybody that knows the McCaherty/McCarthy family. Another interesting tidbit. On a passenger list dated 31 Dec 1862 there is a Callahan McCarthy BUT there is also a JoANNA Donovan. Same boat and only a few spaces away. This board left from Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. They arrived in New York on the ship Etna.
So my objectives:
Found out more about the McCaherty family. Is the McCarthy family and the McCaherty family one and the same?
I am wanting on my resource to get home to order a death cert which would HOPEFULLY have John Henry's parents listed on it. Of course there is a good chance they aren't listed. John Henry died 7 Oct 1937 in Greene County and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield.
Thanks in advance for any help ANYBODY can give!!!
Juls
