Just got back from Phoenix, AZ and read e-mail. I think that I can help with the Nance and Robertson "stuff." I am a granddaughter of Lena Ivalue Nance who married Ellis Prater. Lenas parents were Joseph Nance and Viola McDaniel, her grandparents were
William Nance and Eliza Hooper (with Andrew Jackson Nance as a stepgrandfather), and her greatgrandparents were John Wesley Nance and Mary Lorton.
I believe, but cannot prove and have never tried to prove, that Newton Jasper Nance who married Nancy Moore in 1855 is the same person who appears as Joseph Nance in the 1850 census of Shelby Co. IL in the household of that same John and Mary Nance. The middle name "Wesley" does not appear, but it is the same couple. It may be that the enumerator made an error in recording Jaspers name, but I have only looked at a transcription of the census page, not the original. Checking Ancestry for the original page may indeed clear it up. In any case, I have never been able to find any information on a Joseph Nance born abt. 1836 who could have been a son of John Wesley and Mary (Lorton) Nance. Newton Jasper appears as Newton J. and Jasper in subsequent censuses. In one of them, he is living next door to George Frailey and wife, Mary Ann Nance. Mary Ann was my Joseph Nances sister. In addition, I think all of the Nances at Mudrun are from this family. There were a couple of Nance !
men who
lived in Shelby Co. early on without any obvious connection to John Wesley, but they are not at Mudrun. I do not have specific information on Newton Jaspers family, since for a long time, I assumed that Joseph was correct and just a dead end. I think a number of people here may have information on the other children of John Wesley and Mary (Lorton) Nance.
As for the Robertsons, I have done very little original research, as they are not a direct line, but a collateral one. One of the sisters of my Hallford greatgrandmother married a Robertson and a female descendants husband administered my 3-greats grandfathers estate in Shelby. What I have on the family of Carey Robertson, son of William Robertson and Peggy Alexander, and his siblings is largely the work of others, but I can share if no one else has contacted you with the information.
Know someone here wrote of another Newton Nance. Ancestry has an obit of a Newton Nance from Shelby who was killed by a train in 1929. Is that the one?
