This is about all that I can dig up:
In 1830, there were 4 men named Thomas Nichols listed as head of household in IL. Yours is the only one in Fayette Co. No female child appears--just the one boy.
In 1840, there were 6 men named Thomas Nichols listed as head of household in IL. There was a Tho Smith and a Tho P. Smith in Fayette Co., apparently living close together. Yours (and spouse) were between 30-40 with 1 boy under 5 and 1 boy 10-15, 1 girl under 5 and 2 girls 5-10. No girl appears to be old enough to be Clara.
In 1850, there were 25 men named Thomas Nichols listed as head of household in IL. Yours again was the only one in Fayette Co. He was living with wife Delinda and the following children (who seem to correspond to the previous census)--Martha, Milly, May, William, and Thompson.
