Roy,

I believe that the Charles baptised July 24 1784 was to James Ilsley(b 1750)
and Ann Loader and the Charles baptised Sept 10 1786 was to John and Mary.
Your tombstone and the 1851 Census, which shows Charles aged 63, suggest
that we are talking about the second.

Phillip Southby

Subject: [ILSLEY] Ilsley's in Sherborne

Referencing back to the emails of 23rd July regarding the ancestry of
William Ilsley I've had a quick look at the records that I have and I
suspect that this person was the youngest son of Charles and Sarah who was
baptised on 20 Mar 1831 at Sherborne St John.

If this is so then from what I have the story looks a bit like this :

Charles Ilsley married Sarah Appleton on 24 Oct 1812 at Pamber (Charles
lived in Sherborne)

children were :

Mary Ann baptised 3 Dec 1815
John baptised 19 Jan 1817
James baptised 21 Feb 1819
Jane baptised 7 Jun 1821
Harriett baptised 28 Mar 1823
George baptised 1 Apr 1825
Sarah Anne baptised 1 Apr 1826
Elizabeth baptised 30 Mar 1830
William baptised 20 Mar 1831

Charles' parents were probably John and Mary although is slightly
complicated because it looks as though these parents had two boys baptised
as Charles. The first was on 24 Jul 1784 with the second on 10 Sep 1786 so
it is possible that the first baby died (no burial found) and it is the
second one who married Sarah. Charles was buried on 14 Nov 1864 aged 79 and
Sarah was buried on 11 Mar 1858 aged 67. There are memorial stones in
Sherborne churchyard for these two people.

It is probable that John was baptised on 16 Dec 1750 in Sherborne to parents
Edward and Mary. He married Mary Broughton on 11 Oct 1781. John was
buried on 21 Mar 1820 aged 69 and his widow Mary was buried on 26 Jan 1828
aged 60. There are memorial stones in Sherborne churchyard for these two
people.

Hopefully this will provide some more clues and food for thought.

Roy Montgomery
