Subject: Illinois Mange (curiosity question, not really genealogical)

Would anyone know what the term "Illinois mange" would refer to, in about
1840? I've been reading a novel, set in southern IL in that time period;
apparently it was some sort of seasonal affliction that struck pioneers who
were breaking the soil for the first time. If left untreated too late,
apparently it was fatal.
I tried to google this, but google, in its wisdom, decided I just can't
spell and gave me references to things MANAGED in Illinois -- and also a
recipe for blanc mange.
