Thanks to Colleen and Sandy for their thoughtful responses to my WILSON-L
posting (quoted at the end of this post).
In the 1860 census, the surname for this family is quite clearly "Abbott",
not "Allott"; I haven't looked at the 1870 and 1880 pages yet. I have
checked the family structure in more detail, as follows:
Household #2621 in Garden Plain (found on Ancestry.com census image #361) is
headed by Clark Abbott, age 47, born CT, and his wife, Mary, born OH, age 35.
The household includes the following:
Albert Abbott, 18, m, farm laborer, born Illinois
Ella Abbott, 10, f, born Illinois
Morton S. Wilson, 20, m, farm laborer, born Ohio
John S. Wilson, 18, m, farm laborer, born Ohio
Eliza J. Wilson, 16, f, domestic, born Ohio
Non J. Wilson, 14, m, born Ohio
Charles F. Wilson, 11, m, born Illinois
Joseph C. Wilson, 9, m, born Illinois
Henry E. Wilson, 6, m, born Illinois
Given Mary's age, it's unlikely that she would have had a son in 1840. Also,
given the two children with the Abbott surname, ages 10 and 18, the Wilson
children are unlikely to have been Clark's stepchildren, the relationship
found in the 1880 census by Sandy notwithstanding. The Illinois marriage
index shows that Clark Abbott married Mary Wilson in Whiteside Co. on
10/21/1858, so she is obviously not the mother of Ella and Albert. It also
shows an earlier marriage to Sarah Moore in Kendall Co. on 1/3/1849, which
still leaves Albert motherless.
Although Morton, etc., may have been Mary's younger siblings, that would
require that the family have births extending over 29 years -- not
impossible, but unlikely. It's probably a better bet that they are her
nephews/nieces who were orphaned.
I'm going to post this to the IL Whiteside Co. list too. Maybe we can find
this family of origin.
