Sorry I don't have the lady's name who asked about a certain place in
Will Co., but I just talked to Bob Sterling, an author of local hxs. He
said the only thing he could find was a Co. Poor Farm in the Joliet area.
Indigent persons worked an actual producing farm in the 20s & 30s in
return for room & board.
He agreed that mentally handicapped may have been included in those who
for one reason or another couldn't care for themselves & turned up on the
farm. Location: McDunnough St, Joliet.
He & I suggest contacting Will Co. for possible lists of residents. It's
also possible that the reference you have is to the Manteno St. Hospital,
closed appx early 1980s.
