We find in the Joliet Signal of April 1846, an extract taken from another
paper,which says;"We are permitted to make an exttact from a letter from
Gen. C.C. Van Horne, a distinguished citizen of Northern Illinois dated 26
Mar 1846 which says,We had several teams pass here yesterday on their way to
Oregon. They had cows yoked to draw loads instead of oxen. In all, forty
teams have passed here this spring, and they tell us many more are coming.
They were from Ohio,Indiana and Michigan."

"I left Missouri river the 13th of May. I arrived at Fort Laramie on the 4th
of June, and found, on examining the records, that 5,000 teams were ahead.
At North Platte ferry I found 2000 dead. I passed Independence Rock at the
mouth of the Sweetwater on the 10th of June, at which time I left
McClure,Hunter,Gay,Ingoldsby brothers,Cooper & Co.,Higginbotham, Van Horne
and others, all in good health and spirits."
