1850 Franklin County, Indiana Laurel township page 224 November 6

Joel Hiatt 42 New York
> Sarah Hiatt 38 Iowa
> Joshua Hiatt 15 Ohio
> William Hiatt 12 Ohio
> Mary Hiatt 10 Iowa
> Margarett Hiatt 6 Iowa

The family is just as you have them above, except the Iowa birthplace is
incorrect, it is Indiana. Many of the census takers for 1850 in Indiana
used Ia. as the abbreviation for Indiana, which is misleading, as everyone
thinks that it is supposed to be Iowa. There were no homesteaders in Iowa
in 1812 when Sarah was born. The Louisiana purchase had only occurred in
1803, and the Homestead Act did not happen until 1862.
