Jacob C Roop, one of the best known residents of the city and county, died
Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Murray
at Anderson. Death followed a stroke of paralysis on Christmas day. he
had gone to Anderson just a week ago for a visit at the home of his daughter
and was taken sick almost immediately upon arrival there.
Mr. Roop was born in Starke Co.OH March 8, 1843, a son of Amos and Rachel
Roop, but has been a resident of Adams County many years, coming here when
quite young. He enlisted for service in the war of the rebellion, the first
enlistment dated Oct. 8, 1862 as a private in Company I, 46th Ohio volunteer
infantry, the enlistment being for a period of nine months. He was discharged
at Camp Sherman, OH on the ninth day of August 1863, by reason of the expiration
of the enlistment. He enlisted a second time on feb. 2, 1865 as a private
in Company H, 192nd regiment of Ohio volunteers and was discharged as a
corporal on Sept 1, 1865 at Winchester, VA.having served with credit during
the two enlistments.
At his bedside when the end came yesterday, were his three children, Myrtle
Murray, Hila Murray, and Richard Roop. Besides these two daughters, Mrs.
Emery B Goff of South Bend and a son Charles Roop of Hammond. There are
also a number of grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A sister,
Mrs. John Everett of this city, also survives. Mr. Roop was twice married,
both wives being deceased. A brother, William Roop of Blue Creek twp. died
two months ago and a sister, Mrs. Switzer of lima OH passed away about
a year ago.
